WHO Declares Covid Health Emergency Finally Over; What did we learn from this Pandemic

MsBirgith

On May 5th, 2023, the WHO declared that: has declared “with great hope” an end to COVID-19 as a public health emergency, stressing that it does not mean the disease is no longer a global threat. " It has been 3 years and a couple of months since we first heard about COVID; Covid Pandemic changed the lives of many and affected the whole world.

Today 3 years later, WHO declared that it is the end of public health energy. However, it is essential to remember how the pandemic started and the lessons that can be learned from it. The outbreak first emerged in Wuhan, China, in late December 2019, quickly spreading to other parts of the world.

As the virus spread, governments and health organizations struggled to keep up with the rapidly evolving situation. Lockdowns, travel restrictions, and other measures were implemented to try and contain the virus, but it continued to spread.

Many of us still discuss whether all the measurements were right or wrong. And there is still an ongoing discussion about the Vaccines.

The Covid-19 pandemic started in China and quickly spread to other countries, including Italy and then the rest of Europe, the United States, and the world. Governments implemented lockdowns and quarantine measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

Origin of the Virus?

The origins of the Covid-19 virus are still under investigation, and there is no definitive conclusion yet. In the early days of the pandemic, it was believed that the virus likely originated in a wet market in Wuhan, China, and was transmitted from animals to humans. However, as more information has come to light, the possibility of a lab leak as the origin of the virus has also been raised.

The theory that the virus may have escaped from a laboratory in Wuhan, such as the Wuhan Institute of Virology, has gained more attention in recent months. Proponents of this theory point to the fact that the lab in question was conducting research on bat coronaviruses and that some of the early cases of Covid-19 were linked to individuals who had a connection to the lab.

Then the Vaccine was seen like a key solution:

Vaccines were seen as a key solution to combatting the pandemic, with many virologists and health experts advocating for widespread vaccination. Pharmaceutical companies worked quickly to develop vaccines, and governments began rolling out vaccination programs.

However, vaccine hesitancy and misinformation have been significant challenges in vaccinating enough people to achieve herd immunity. The implementation of vaccine passes or vaccine passports in some countries has been controversial, with some seeing it as a way to encourage vaccination and others seeing it as a violation of personal freedoms.

It is also true that while vaccines have effectively reduced the severity of illness and hospitalizations, they have not entirely stopped the spread of the virus. Mask-wearing, social distancing, and other measures are still being recommended to help prevent the spread of the virus.

As of April 30th, 2023, the WHO's Coronavirus Dashboard reports that there have been over 765 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 worldwide, with nearly 7 million deaths.

Over 13.3 billion vaccine doses have been administered globally, but the pandemic poses challenges and risks. It is essential to remain vigilant and follow public health guidelines to help slow the spread of the virus.

This Virus and the Pandemic affected the whole world, and as time goes on, we get more information regarding the virus, vaccines, etc.
