Route 3 Ramp Closure and Detour in Clifton Tonight; I-78 Eastbound Express Lanes Closed in Springfield for Bridge Repairs
Clifton, Passaic County – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced that the Route 3 westbound ramp to Route 21 northbound will be closed and detoured tonight, Thursday, March 30, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, March 31, in Clifton, Passaic County. The closure is necessary to reopen the shoulder on the Route 3 ramp, which has been closed for bridge repairs since June 2022.
Motorists planning to take the Route 3 westbound ramp to Route 21 northbound will be directed to follow a detour that involves taking the ramp to Route 21 southbound, continuing on Route 21 southbound, taking Exit 8 to Nutley/Lyndhurst, turning left onto River Road/CR 624, turning left onto Park Avenue, and finally turning left to take the ramp to Route 21 northbound.
The repairs are part of a $9.7 million state-funded maintenance project that aims to repair steel and aluminum structures at various locations in eight counties throughout North Jersey. The precise timing of the work may be subject to change due to weather or other factors.
In a related development, NJDOT has also announced the closure of I-78 eastbound Express lanes tonight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. tomorrow, in Springfield, Union County. All traffic will be directed to use I-78 eastbound Local lanes. The closure is required for structural steel repairs to bearings and girders on the Shunpike Road Bridge over I-78. The eastbound Express lanes will reopen on Friday morning, but the right shoulder in the Express lanes will remain closed.
This work is part of a $10 million state-funded maintenance project designed to repair bridge infrastructure at various locations in eight counties throughout North Jersey. As with the Clifton closure, the precise timing of the work in Springfield is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
Motorists are advised to plan their travel accordingly and anticipate possible delays due to the closures and detours. For up-to-date information on traffic conditions, visit 511nj.org or download the 511NJ smartphone app.
