Walgreens and Other Testing Locations Cancel COVID Testing Appointments

Several testing centers around the country and in our state have canceled COVID tests with limited notice to customers.

A lab backlog in CT forced a pharmacy to cancel 700+ COVID-19 testing appointments without warning. This trend is happening throughout the nation as resources for COVID-19 tests are at an all-time low.

Walgreens in Florham Park recently canceled appointments for customers scheduled for a COVID test this week, and currently offers no available times for those customers to reschedule their appointments.

Walgreens uses two main laboratory partners to test patient samples, LabCorp and Aegis Sciences.

LabCorp has not reported any testing backlogs or cancelations and did not respond to Morristown Minute's inquiries into the cause of COVID test cancelations at their partnered Walgreens sites. LabCorp still advertises a 1-to-2-day result window.

Aegis last reported in late December on its ability to test samples and provide fast results quickly and efficiently. This report was made despite the increase in testing demand and limited resources.

CVS on Speedwell Avenue is now offering limited testing appointments to those who qualify under new guidelines. To qualify for testing customers must answer a questionnaire asking the following:

1. Are you testing for travel?

2. Are you testing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 after returning from a location where social distancing was not possible?

3. Have you had recent contact with someone infected with COVID-19?

4. Do you live in a residential setting with an increased risk for COVID-19 infection? (long-term care facility, correction or detention centers, shelters, assisted living facilities, etc.)

5. Are you a health care worker?

6. Do you have a high COVID infection risk at work?

7. Were you referred for a COVID-19 test by your health care provider?

8. Have you had COVID-19 symptoms in the last 14 days?

Prometric, a testing facility in Union, NJ, has recently canceled numerous appointments in order to adhere to new social distancing guidelines, once more in effect.

The testing location has reopened with limited seats available and reports that cancelations and closures are likely due to limited resources and external factors such as extreme weather conditions.

Prometric currently reports the closure of two New Jersey testing sites in Fair Lawn on Route 4.

With travel requirements and returning to work after the holiday season, many New Jersey residents will need a COVID test to return to life as usual. These sudden cancelations have prevented many from being able to travel or return to work.

Like Walgreens, many testing sites that cancel appointments will not offer an opportunity to reschedule, or if they do customers are likely to find limited to no available times to reschedule their appointments.

Have you had a sudden COVID-19 test cancelation? Where were you planning on getting tested? How soon did they notify you of the cancelation? Was this COVID test required for return to work or travel? What will you do now that you are unable to test?
