CONROE, TX - The Texas Homeowner Assistance Fund Program (TXHAF) is now live and aiming to help Texas residents with grants to pay for past due mortgages, property taxes, HOA fees, and utilities.
The new program is being administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs and is accepting applications from homeowners statewide. Since the programs launch on March 2, 2022, there has already been $9.2 million in assistance paid out with another $693,881,905 is assistance available.
As part of the American Rescue Plan Act, the monies have a broad list of uses for homeowners, including facilitating mortgage interest rate reductions, utility payment assistance, broadband internet access payment, down payment assistance loans, delinquent property taxes, and Homeowner’s Association fees or liens.
“Homeowners that have delinquent taxes can apply to the program and if they qualify, TDHCA will send a check for the delinquent taxes to my office to avoid foreclosure,” said Tammy McRae, Montgomery County Tax Assessor-Collector. “The payment is a grant, not a loan. I encourage all homeowners to apply who qualify and have delinquent taxes.”
The funding will be available until December 31, 2026, or until it runs out. Each homeowner could be entitled to up to $25,000. In Montgomery County, the Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office will be sending out notices to all homeowners who have delinquent taxes to take advantage of the program.
According to current data from the program, Hidalgo County has already claimed $4.1 million in assistance, with Harris County utilizing $1.1 million of the funds so far this month. Montgomery County has only used $122,668 of the funding to assist 10 homeowners.
Everyone is welcome to apply for the funding, and can begin the process at the TXHAF website.
