Instagram and Meta are working on a new application that is going to potentially become a new competitor for Twitter. We might also now have some kind of clue as to what the text-based Twitter competitor on Instagram is going to look like. This is based on a picture provided by Lia Haberman who shared a leaked marketing slide of what this particular app/feature can look like when it is realized in her ICYMI Substack newsletter. The slide does not give the app a separate name o treat it like a separate application from Instagram. In fact, the slide just calls this new feature “Instagram’s new text-based app for conversations” .
Users will be able to use their Instagram username and password & your followers, handle, bio, and verification will transfer over from the main Instagram app when the Twitter alternative is done. In the app, you will see a feed and you will be able to create text posts with up to 500 characters as well as attached links, photos, and videos.
Soon, our app will be compatible with certain other apps like Mastodon. Users on these other apps will be able to search for, follow and interact with your profile and content if you’re public, or if you’re private and approve them as followers. - Instagram slide
This all makes sense after Meta talked earlier about creating a social media platform for sharing text updates in a microblogging manner: "We’re exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests."
