What is happening?
Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon, is leaving Seattle, the city where he started his iconic company nearly three decades ago. In a recent Instagram post, the 59-year-old announced his plans to relocate to Miami, the city where he spent his high school years, in order to be closer to his parents and his partner, Lauren Sánchez. This decision comes almost three years after Bezos stepped down as the CEO of Amazon, which remains based in Seattle.
Bezos expressed his emotional attachment to Seattle, as it has been his home since 1994 when he founded Amazon in his garage. In the Instagram post, Bezos gave a brief video tour of Amazon's first office, highlighting the humble beginnings of the tech giant. He acknowledged that Seattle has been his home for longer than any other place.
Blue Origin's Shift
One of the reasons for Bezos' move to Miami is the shift in operations for his rocket company, Blue Origin. He mentioned that Blue Origin's operations are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral, which is approximately 200 miles south of Miami. This geographical proximity seems to be a contributing factor to the decision.
Real Estate in Miami
Miami has already attracted other prominent figures from the tech industry, and Bezos himself owns lavish properties in the area. He recently acquired a mansion in South Florida's "Billionaire Bunker" for $79 million, following the purchase of a neighboring estate for $68 million just two months earlier. Both properties are located in Indian Creek, an exclusive man-made island in Miami, and Bezos' celebrity neighbors include Tom Brady, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner.
While Bezos stepped down as Amazon's CEO in early 2021 with the intention of dedicating more time to philanthropy and other projects, he still wields significant influence over the company as its executive chair and its largest shareholder. His relocation to Miami marks a new chapter in his life, both personally and professionally.
