Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network offers training on mental health crisis intervention

DETROIT, MI – In over 2,700 communities nationwide, Crisis Intervention Team programs connect law enforcement, mental health providers, hospital emergency services, and individuals with mental illness and their families - including those in Detroit.

A Crisis Intervention Team program is an innovative, community-based approach to improve the outcomes of these connections that have been proven to reduce arrests of people with mental illness while simultaneously increasing the likelihood that individuals will receive mental health services.

Mental Health First Aid can teach you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The international education program has proven to be effective to help adults recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use.

Meanwhile, Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety provides law officers and staff with more response options. These options are hoped to help them to respond to mental health-related situations appropriately without compromising the safety of themselves and the involved individuals. You can request a free class at asmith1@dwihn.org.

Alternatively, the Detroit-Wayne CIT Program, part of Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network, also offers a 40 hour 40-hour comprehensive training this September 20-24, 2021, and October 18-22, 2021. The training is free for Police Department staff in Wayne County and costs $500 per person for the general public.

The training will emphasize mental health-related topics, including crisis resolution skills, de-escalation training, and access to community-based services. Daily meals, material/supplies, transportation to site visits are included in the training fee.
