It’s hot outside, but it’s about to get hotter. Sugar Wood, a dessert shop in lower Manhattan that bills itself as inclusive and sex-positive, has added a new item to its menu this summer: genital-shaped popsicles.
The penis shaped Woody and vulva-shaped Kitty ice pops are $8 each, vegan-friendly and gluten-free. They are made from real fruit purees. Woodys are available in strawberry, mango, lemon and piña colada flavors and Kitty popsicles are available in pineapple-coconut. While neither contains alcohol, Sugar Wood can make boozy Woody and Kitty popsicles for special events and caterings.
The popsicles are the latest addition to Sugar Wood’s cheeky offerings. The dessert shop is best known for their genital-shaped waffles. "The idea for Sugar Wood came from traveling around the world," says Austin Allan, the shop’s founder, who previously created the brand Tio Gazpacho. “I saw penis-shaped baguettes in Paris, cookies in San Francisco, and wine bottles in Napa Valley and wanted to bring the craze to New York.”
Mr. Allan’s friends, the Brooklyn based design duo, Guillermo Ovies and Sebastian Arguello, came up with the name Sugar Wood. Another close friend, Tom Smallwood, formerly of Magnolia Bakery consulted on Sugar Wood’s recipes. Mr. Smallwod is known nationally for competing on the Food Network’s Spring Baking Championship.
Waffles are available in traditional cinnamon, vanilla and vegan chocolate chip. They are then doused in a selection of decadent sauces from milk chocolate, strawberry chocolate, salted caramel, white chocolate, or peanut butter.
According to Mr. Allan, it is not Sugar Wood’s intention to be vulgar or pornographic with their genital shaped desserts. “We simply want to make people laugh and create a bright spot in their day or their trip to NYC.”
There is an activist component to the shop's mission. Sugar Wood donates a portion of their monthly profits to the Phluid Phoundation, an organization that supports Trans-led organizations and homeless queer youth. Additionally, during last month’s Pride festivities, Sugar Wood donated 100% of profits from the month’s Kitty popsicle sales to Abortion Freedom Fund, an organization that offers telehealth abortion services for women in states where access is being restricted or eliminated.
The response from downtown New Yorkers has been overwhelmingly positive. The genital shaped desserts have become so popular, especially with birthday, office, and bachelorette parties, that Mr. Allan recently added a catering arm to Sugar Wood and now offers party boxes packed with genital shaped waffles and bottles of drizzling sauce.
The Woody and Kitty popsicles continue the shop’s tradition of adding product to match the season. Sugar Wood introduced Naughty Gingerbread People cookies for the holidays and penis-shaped chocolate bars for Valentine's Day.
Sugar Wood is located at 157 Prince Street and open Wednesdays through Sundays.
