Discover a family-owned local favorite and leave satisfied
Your Place Thai Cuisine in Santa Barbara was the first Thai food I tried. I wasn’t much of an adventurous eater when I was twelve, but I loved the new spicy flavors of Thailand. It’s a wonderful place to come with your family or have a date night. You could also stop by for a delicious lunch on your break from work.
Located on the Eastside of Santa Barbara, CA, this hidden gem will be sure to satisfy delight you. They have free parking, and we’ve never had to wait more than five or ten minutes, despite their relatively small dining room.
Your Place is family-owned and operated, which adds to its charm. Some of their servers have worked there since they opened in 1983. The first person greeting us was always the same smiling woman. Your Place is a family-owned restaurant, and I’m sure she was one of the owner’s relatives. I recall seeing her the last time we dined there, only a few years ago. I think she’s been s server there for over 35 years.
My family and I tried one of the “medium” spicy dishes back then, which was hotter than expected. We’re all about spicy food, but now we know to get the milder version. They offer mild, medium, and hot. If you’re unaccustomed to spicy Thai food, I suggest starting with a mildly spicy dish.
We always get a hot pot of Tom Kha Gai soup with chicken, made with coconut milk, broth, chili, lemongrass, and mushrooms. I don’t know how they make such a mouthwatering soup from these simple ingredients, but wow. If you haven’t had Tom Kha soup before, go to Your Place and see what I mean. Your taste buds will thank you.
Your Place was the first restaurant I tried Thai iced tea. They keep it simple with two ingredients — black tea and coconut milk. But what a treat to have such a sweet drink with dinner. After dinner, we always eat coconut ice cream. It’s the best Thai dessert I’ve had.
When you bring someone with you, I recommend ordering several dishes to share family style. My favorites are their Panang curry with chicken and spicy eggplant and basil. I also love the drunken noodles. Admittedly, I’ve ordered both of these dishes plus the Tom Kha soup for myself a few times. My leftovers are divine.
They offered me free mango ice cream with my takeout a couple of times. On one occasion, an older woman gave me a little brown bag with a mango dessert when the restroom wasn’t working. She was one of the owners or a long-time employee and spoke only a little English. We smiled and nodded during the exchange. I didn’t know what she gave me until later. What a kind gesture.
The dining room has a simple yet elegant decor, with several aquariums of large fish. They have intense expressions that are a great conversation piece. They have a few Buddha statues and the prosperity kitty in front.
Your Place Thai Cuisine offers authentic family recipes and excellent service, all for a reasonable price. It’s a great place to bring a date or family and friends. They’re kid-friendly, too.
