2022 Property Tax Assessments
This year’s property tax assessments, which were mailed on May 27, were surrounded by controversy and complaints from property owners throughout Forsyth County.
According to the Forsyth County Government website, the Board of Assessors is a separate body from the Board of Commissioners and runs independently to determine property tax assessments in accordance with the Georgia Department of Revenue and the laws in place in the state.
In a public notice posted earlier this year, Forsyth County Chief Appraiser Mary Kirkpatrick explained how property is assessed:
“State law requires that property assessments are based on fair market value, and Forsyth County is consistent with surrounding counties and national trends,” said Kirkpatrick. “Even though fair market property values have increased 18 to 20% over the past year, residents with a floating homestead exemption will see very little if any increase on the county portion of their tax bill. Approximately 95% of the increase most homeowners will see on their tax bill will be a result of the school’s operation and bond estimated tax.”
Property owners had until July 11 to file an appeal for their current property tax assessment.
