EDWARDSVILLE – The Madison County Coroner’s Office released the names the two men that died after becoming unconscious after doing work in a manhole at a construction site in the 100 block of East Union on Friday in Edwardsville.

Workers Jack M. Pfund, 19, of Edwardsville, and Cody W. Toenyes, 22, of Bethalto, were identified by the Madison County’s Coroner’s Office.

Fire Officials said the atmosphere where the men were located was found to contain very little oxygen and a buildup of toxic gases, as is common in confined underground spaces. Jack is the son of Pfund Construction CEO and President Matt Pfund.

After graduation from CM high school Toenyes started his career as a deckhand for Lewis and Clark Marine and quickly moved to fleet mate but his passion was building which led him to PFund Construction.

Pfund has loved construction since the moment he could walk. As he grew into a young man that love only intensified. He was always so much wiser beyond his years and had a heart that one could not imagine. If anyone needed something, Jack was the first one to be there and the last one to leave. He volunteered his time with Habitat for Humanity and any other organization that needed a hand. Jack is survived by his sister, Laynie Pfund of Edwardsville; brother, Charles Pfund of Edwardsville; paternal grandparents, John & Sue Pfund of Sycamore, Illinois; maternal grandparents, William & Virginia Moran of Ft. Myers, Florida.

Toenyes leaves behind his fiancée Justine Joiner. He has one daughter, Kinslee Toenyes, with another daughter, Renlee, soon to arrive. He is survived by two siblings, a brother Dustan Toenyes of East Alton, and a sister, Courtney (Alex) Taylor of Bethalto.
