Taj Mahal Restaurant is a local favorite when it comes to Indian food in Lancaster, PA. We have ordered takeout from them several times, but after they opened up for dine-in, my husband and I decided to try dining in the restaurant.

Indian culture

The restaurant is filled with unique details. Every wall is covered with tapestries featuring silks that are stitched with threads died in traditional vegetable oils or hand designed with glass beads. Close to the entrance, you'll find a three-dimensional image of the Taj Mahal in India. All the artwork and photos in the restaurant tells a story intended to educate and entertain visitors about Indian culture.

We did not have reservations, so we ended up waiting for 10-15 minutes before we were seated. The wait was well-worth it. Once we started on our appetizer, Chana Chat, a tangy combination of chickpeas, potatoes and onion tossed in tamarind sauce sprinkled with black salt, we know it was going to be good. The appetizer, which was a cold-served dish, was a great start to the meal.

For my entree, I went with a vegetarian meal as well - Matter Paneer - featuring fresh homemade cubes of cottage cheese lightly fried and cooked with fresh green peas in onion, tomato, and cashew sauce. With naan on the side, this was a filling, sweet meal.

Live music

During our meal, there was live music, making the dining experience very special and authentic. And the staff were absolutely amazing. It was a friendly atmosphere throughout the restaurant, and although it was busy, we did not feel rushed. Definitely coming back for more.
