Lancaster County is a haven for baked goods and sweet desserts. You've got the traditional baked goods you can find at Amish road stands and rural bakeries, and there are trendy cafes and bakeshops in the city. And of course, the ice cream. With all the dairy farms throughout the county, no wonder the ice cream around here is tasty. Here are 4 places I frequently visit when I crave nothing short of amazing desserts.

Achenbach's

Now this place is both history and sweetness all at once. Achenbach's has been around since 1954 when Leon and Anna Achenbach made their dream of starting a bakery business in Lancaster County come true. Over time, it's grown to become more than just a bakery. It's a community gathering spot, and people visit from far to get their hands on the treats served here.

Long John's is one of the desserts the county is known for, and this is thanks to the Achenbach's bakery. A Long John looks like a long and fluffy donut, with a good spread of icing topping it.

Root's Country Market

This market may seem overwhelming at first, but I promise, once you find the desserts, it's all worth it. My favorite at Root's Country Market is cheesecake from a local vendor that can be found in one of their indoor buildings. Although they had several varieties, I went for the plain one because, in my opinion, nothing beats a fresh, simple cheesecake. Root's also has delicious shoofly pies and donuts.

The market is only open on Tuesdays, so make sure to stock up on sweets when you go!

Lancaster Cupcake

You can't go wrong with this one. Lancaster Cupcake has several locations throughout Lancaster and serves freshly made gourmet cupcakes. They feature seasonal favorites (St. Patrick cupcakes this week) as well as classic staples. In addition to the cupcakes, they serve coffee, ice cream, cakes, and cookies.

Lancaster Cupcake has three locations, plus the pink cupcake cup you've probably seen if you're a local. 260 Granite Run is their largest location and here, they also do classes from time to time. It is also a rental space for parties. You can also find Lancaster Cupcake in the city center at 24 West Orange Street, and at Park City Center.

Fox Meadows

I keep coming back to this spot. Fox Meadows is a Creamery & Country Market in Ephrata, a town north of Lancaster City. The creamery makes hand-crafted ice cream made on-site with milk from the owner's dairy farm that you can spot from across the field. This is as local as you get.

For curious kids, this creamery also features a viewing window into the processing room where, if you come at the right time, you can watch the staff create the many ice cream flavors. Yum!
