Mt Pleasant institution, Thomas’ Barber Shop, has closed its doors for good. Located in the “Bi-Lo” shopping center adjacent to The Towne Center. Thomas's was a throwback to another time.
When a customer walked in, they would put their name on a yellow legal pad and indicate their preferred barber. While waiting, they sat on what seemed to be old church pews lining the walls on either side of the waiting area. There were toys for kids to play with, as well as a collection of old magazines to pass the time. However, most customers ignored the magazines in favor of their phones.
Up in the corner was a TV that I could never hear. The walls were adorned with NASCAR memorabilia and reminders to be good Christians.
The Haircut.
I always went to Leona (Lee). We got to know each other ever so slightly. We enquired about each other's families and how we have been.
While getting my haircut, I enjoyed observing the other customers. It was clear that they had been regulars for many years. Most of them were men, both young and old. Every now and then, I would spot a proud dad, watching his little boy sitting up straight in the barber chair for the very first time.
It made me smile and remember my own dad.
Lee after finishing with what little hair I have left shaved my neck. Then she would take a hot towel out of a container on her counter and rub my neck for 10 seconds or so. God, I am going to miss those towels.
Carolyn
Carolyn was the owner-operator and occupied the barber stall on the right as you entered. She would greet everyone who came in—you could tell she was in charge. When I arrived to get my haircut today this message was taped to the door on a white poster board.
Thomas’ Barber Shop is closed. Carolyn after 45yrs of barbering is retiring. Thank you for supporting us and I hope God continues to bless everyone. We will have an appreciation in Moultrie News soon. Thank you
Thank you, Carolyn, Lee, and all the other barbers at Thomas’. I wish you all the best!
