A baby was born with two heads, two hearts, and three hands in the Ratnam district of Madhya Pradesh in India. The child, which had its third hand in the back in between its heads, was born to a woman named Shaheen Khan. Shaheen was left speechless when she saw her first child after being told she would have twins.
As for this baby’s scans, they couldn’t detect the child’s condition before its birth.
According to the doctor, the child suffers from a condition called dicephalic parapagus, a form of partial twinning with two heads on each side of the body. As per the National Center for Biotechnology Information, this condition affects only 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 births, and 11 percent of conjoined twins have this condition.
Fortunately, the baby was stable on life support after birth. But other similar cases had a stillbirth or the baby dying 48 hours after birth. Another option is to operate, which has only 60 to 70 percent survival rates.
The baby had been shifted to a better hospital in Indore to offer it the proper treatment.
Similar cases have been reported in India before. In 2019, a woman gave birth to ‘rare conjoined twins’ with three arms and shared organs. But the doctors understood that something was amiss when the mother was 34 weeks pregnant. Also, the ultrasound showed the rare form of the baby.
