Donald Trump is planning on foregoing the Republican debate and wants to visit the striking UAW workers in Michigan.
Trump is seeking a return to the Whitehouse despite facing 91 criminal charges. In order to do so he will have to flip Michigan back to red. Michigan voted for Biden in the last presidential election, but Trump carried the state in 2016.
One of the ways to ingratiate oneself with the United Auto Workers, as Michigan is the birthplace of the auto industry. The UAW represents 150,000 workers.
Currently the union is striking all three Detroit car companies, Ford, GM, and Stellantis, for the first time in history.
Michigan Advance reports that the former President will be heading to MIchigan to visit the picket line.
However, he shouldn’t expect a warm welcome from the union’s top brass.
The UAw has made it clear that they do not want the former real estate mogul’s interference with negotiations.
To them Trump is part of the problem.
“Every fiber of our union is being poured into fighting the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donland Trump at the expense of the workers.” Said UAW President Shawn Fain.
Despite not being courted by the union Trump has not held his tongue on what he thinks the UAW should do. He has blamed electric vehicles and President Biden for the workers woes.
Trump has said that Fain is not doing a good job because all the electric vehicles will be made in China. He also blames President Biden for wanting more car production to be electric vehicles.
