It’s not a secret. Michigan has the worst Covid situation in the country right now. There were over 10,000 new cases today. The spike is higher than the previous one.

And yet there are no new restrictions coming. Gov. Whitmer had a press conference today to address the cases where she doubled down on her strategy.

"The national experts with whom we consult have said, 'You don't have a policy problem,' " Whitmer said. "Michigan still has some of the strongest protocols in place — capacity restrictions, we've got a mask mandate. Other states have dropped all of these things. We still have them in Michigan, and yet we have high (COVID-19) positivity rates."

As of now no new strategy is coming.

It is interesting that because Whitmer invokes national experts as so far national disease experts have been critical of her decisions. Just this week CDC chief Dr. Rochelle Walensky called for the governor to shut the state down. She explained that the governor’s plan of focusing on vaccines wouldn’t work as it would take far too long to start seeing the effects of increased vaccines and that the state’s situation is dire.

The state is in a similar situation to last year. The curve needs to be flattened to keep hospitals from being overrun. And the medical fighting the disease now are a year into the pandemic. They are tired, and losing hope.

Just today Dr. Barbara Ducatman, Chief Medical Officer Beaumont, Royal Oak said this “You’re tired of missing life events like weddings and graduations? Our nurses are tired of holding so many patients’ hands as they die, knowing the hand the patient really wants to hold is yours.”

They are powerful words. Ones that some people in government need to hear. It’s not about politics anymore. The hospitals are near capacity and now Gov. Whitmer is essentially leaving them out in the cold..

The governor is losing the support she once had. And now her top health official was caught going on vacation.

Hopefully, someone convinces her to shut it down. We may be down, but we’re not out yet. So help the hospitals out. Stay home. Stay safe.
