They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that art is the communication of intimate concepts that cannot be faithfully portrayed by words alone. Certainly, the new golden eight-foot female sculpture now on the roof of the state courthouse in New York City has a few things to communicate.
Titled “NOW” by the artist, the statue is adorned with golden braids curling off of both sides of the head with tentacled arms spread wide. If the goal of art is to elicit emotions, this artist was hugely successful, especially to the far-right pundits.
The DML news app calls it a ‘Satanic golden medusa.’ Fox News had a little more to say, also calling it a monstrosity. And according to the Fox News article, the conservative Daily Signal’s Mary Margaret Olohan said the new art piece had a "bizarre resemblance" to Satanic imagery.
Other far-right news personalities wondered if and when it could be destroyed and called it a ‘horned goddess statue’ and a ‘demon.’
The artist told the New York Times that, “she is a fierce woman and a form of resistance in a space that has historically been dominated by patriarchal representation.” The statue was created to pay homage to Ruth Bader Ginsberg and her fight for abortion. The statue is adorned with the late Supreme Court Justice’s signature lace collar.
Perhaps the far-right news media would have been happier if the statue depicted a pregnant, barefoot woman with long straight hair, wearing a long sleeve dress and clutching a bible in one hand, her crucifix in the other and gazing up adoringly at her husband and sister-wives?
