A Marshalls store in Minneapolis is shutting down permanently during the next few weeks. The store, located at 40 S. 7th St., is expected to have its last retail trading day on January 14, 2023.
A spokesperson for Marshalls provided a statement for the closure of the Minneapolis store."We are always assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies, and our decision to close this store reflects that thinking," the company statement reads. "We are grateful for the loyalty of our Minneapolis customers and invite them to visit our nearby stores to continue to find great values, including the Marshalls in Roseville and the T.J. Maxx in Saint Paul."
The news that Marshalls is closing a store in Minneapolis will be disappointing for many people in Minnesota. It follows a long list of businesses that have been forced to shut down due to declining sales and a turbulent economy.
Retail sales in the United States dropped 0.6% month-over-month in November 2022. For context, that's significantly worse than market forecasts of a 0.1% decline.
"Inflation, which Americans have been experiencing most of this year, is shaping up to become the defining factor for the holiday shopping season," per The New York Times. "Many of the same patterns that played out in November, such as shoppers’ concerns about the economy, are likely to remain in the final weeks of the year."
