Achieving Mastery In Anything Is A Lot Easier Than You Might Expect

Matt Lillywhite

I used to believe that it was impossible to accomplish difficult things. Anyone who could speak multiple languages or understand complex topics was born with exceptional intelligence. At least, that’s what I used to think.

The reason? I grew up in a small town and spent a lot of time with people that had minimal levels of ambition. So as you’d expect, I didn’t have any either. Heck, I didn’t even know that it was possible to increase my intelligence and accomplish pretty much anything I desire.

But one day, my entire life changed for the better. I said to myself that I was going to create a better life. I wanted to learn new things and become more knowledgable in a variety of topics. And sure enough, I quickly found myself learning new skills with ease.

Here are several strategies that you can use to do the same:

Learn something new every day, regardless of small it might be.

I like to think of learning a new skill like the expansion of the universe. At first, it was tiny (smaller than a single atom). Yet, it grew over time into something that’s infinitely big and beautiful.

A few years ago, I went to Quebec for the first time. Back then, I could barely speak a word of French. However, I thought it would be a nice idea to visit a small town in the countryside for a day.

The server at a cafe asked me what I would like to drink. I looked at him with a confused facial expression. He might as well have spoken Chinese because I didn’t have a clue what he was saying apart from a few basic phrases that I remembered from high school. I didn’t speak much French. He couldn’t speak English. Honestly, I couldn’t help but feel embarrassed.

Looking back, I’m glad that happened. It was as if the universe was trying to tell me that I should integrate learning into my daily routine. Because if I spent a few minutes per day studying French, the language barrier wouldn’t have been a problem.

So from that moment onwards, I decided to set aside an hour each day to study languages and various other subjects. I made a small amount of progress each day. And as my progress accumulated, so did my knowledge. Within a few months, I learned enough French vocabulary to have a conversation with relative ease.

According to a study by the Pew Research Center, lifelong learning has several benefits that can significantly enhance your quality of life. For example:

  • You’ll find it easier to transform a hobby into a full-time income if you can learn a skill and market your work effectively.
  • You’ll be more effective in helping others, as you’ll have knowledge in a wide variety of subjects.
  • You’ll be able to help your children and grandchildren succeed in school by helping them with various homework assignments.

Consider setting aside a few minutes (or hours) each day to learn something new. Chances are, you’re not going to become a genius overnight. However, consistent dedication will inevitably result in you accumulating more knowledge over time.

Embrace the art of starting from zero.

I used to be a terrible writer. For a long time, I couldn’t string a sentence together without having dozens of spelling mistakes. But I was determined to make my dreams a reality. So, I said to myself that I was willing to do whatever it takes to become a full-time writer.

Every single day, I spent a few hours writing new articles. Sure, they weren’t great in the beginning. But with consistent practice, the quality of my writing gradually improved.

  • I had to find new topics and stories to write about.
  • I spent countless hours studying the features of successful articles and then implementing them into my own work.
  • I had to embrace my stupidity and realize that improvement was only possible with consistent, deliberate practice.

After doing all of that, I eventually created a full-time income doing something I truly love.

According to Entrepreneur Magazine, “There is a misconception that successful individuals were born with unique gifts and talents that place them on a higher pedestal than the rest of us. The truth is that everybody starts at zero. No one was born into success. Even those born into wealth can choose destructive or constructive paths.”

So, during the beginning of the learning process, it’s important to embrace the fact that you know nothing. Be willing to start from zero and learn something new each day. Because when you continually put one foot in front of the other, you’ll eventually reach your desired destination.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to control a lot of things that happen in the future. However, you will always have control over your level of consistency, dedication, and perseverance.

Achieving mastery in any given subject is easier than you might expect. Because when you start from zero and practice every day, you’ll inevitably make significant amounts of progress over time. So what are you waiting for?

Start now.
