Arizona Says the Holiday Season is a Great Time to Get a Travel ID

Mark Hake

The Arizona Dept. of Transportation (ADOT) says the Holiday season is a great time to get an Arizona Travel ID.

This is the enhanced identification requirement that TSA will require starting on May 7, 2025, to board airlines starting then.

The Arizona Travel ID is your driver's license with a star designation in the upper right-hand corner:

This signifies that the holder has supplied additional proof of identification to ensure that their license or identification meets strict requirements of the federal REAL ID Act of 2005.

You can go to the AZ Travel ID website to see the requirements. The federal requirements include the following:

  • Proof of identity: a birth certificate or U.S. passport
  • Social Security Number: just the number, not the card
  • Two documents proving Arizona residency: rental or bank statements, credit card or cell phone bills in your name with your current Arizona address, etc.

More information on the REAL ID requirements are available on the Homeland Security site.

How to Get an AZ Travel ID

ADOT says that you can do a walk-in at an MVD office to get this Travel ID.

However, they suggest scheduling an appointment through Live Chat or online at

ADOT recommends scheduling an appointment for the Travel ID in 2024 to be ready for the 2025 deadline.
