Arizona's Travel Requirement Deadline is Approaching

Mark Hake

Arizona's Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division says that the upcoming deadline to obtain a Travel ID is May 7, 2025.

This ID is the same as what other states call a REAL ID. It is based on the REAL ID Act and the requirements of the Department of Homeland Security.

The AZ Travel ID or REAL ID will allow any airplane traveler to board airlines starting on May 7, 2025, without having to carry a U.S. passport (even for travel within the U.S.).

For example, the AZ website shows that the Travel ID has a gold circle star in the upper right-hand corner of the driver's license.

This can be seen in the picture above. The cost for an upgraded Travel ID is $25.00

The deadline is approaching within one year and a half. There could also be a rush starting at the end of 2024 to get the Travel ID as people begin to realize that many have not obtained the ID and will be crowding AZ MVD offices.

The bottom line is that you do not want to be stuck at the airport, trying to get on a plane starting on May 5, 2025, without either a Travel ID or an unexpired U.S. passport. Your regular driver's license won't' work then.
