Florida Won't Accept Undocumented Drivers from Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Rhode Island, or Vermont.

Florida will no longer allow undocumented driver's license holders from 5 states to drive legally in Florida. Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Hawaii are the five states.

These five states issue specific driver's licenses for undocumented aliens. For example, the Connecticut website is specifically designed to allow undocumented people in that state to get driver's licenses. The site says this:

" You may be eligible for a drive-only license if you have the formal documents required by the drive-only license document checklist, cannot establish your legal presence in the United States, and may not have a social security number."

This CT license has a "DO" prominently displayed, "Drive Only."

Florida no longer accepts these licenses as they imply that the driver is in the U.S. illegally.

This is all part of the state's new immigration crackdown law from Senate Bill (SB) 1718. The bill prohibits the issuance of a driver's license to anyone who does not provide proof of lawful presence in the U.S. and specifies that out-of-state driver licenses issued exclusively to illegal aliens are invalid in Florida.

“Someone who is in our country illegally and has violated our laws should not possess a government-issued ID which allows them access to state-funded services and other privileges afforded to lawful residents,” said Governor Ron DeSantis.

Effectively this means if you are driving in Florida with one of the Drive Only licenses, and you get pulled over, the police may pull your license and forbid you from driving.

This could be quite a surprise, especially for anyone in the state for the first time or even just visiting. It's also not clear that you will be able to rent a car at an airport if you have one of these 5 state licenses specifically designed for undocumented people.
