The Biden Administration is lifting all Covid-19 restrictions on people who show up at the border.
On May 12, the DHS says that it "will no longer require non-U.S. travelers entering the United States via land ports of entry and ferry terminals to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide related proof of vaccination upon request."
As a result, Texas cities are bracing for a massive flood of immigrants.
Already, the Texas cities of Brownsville, El Paso, and Laredo have issued emergency declarations. Reuters reports that Venezuelans are already crossing illegally at the Texas Rio Grande Valley, according to the U.S. Border Patrol. A spike in arrivals is overwhelming shelters in these cities.
US Customs and Border Protection has had more than 8,000 daily encounters, according to a Homeland Security official. They say this could reach 10,000 once Title 42 is lifted.
Governor Abbott Reacts
Moreover, Texas Governor Greg Abbott this week resumed a campaign to bus migrants to Democratic-led cities. This includes Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C.
The Texas Governor also said on Twitter that the Biden Administration's action to send 1,500 troops to the border "does nothing to stop immigration." He said they will primarily do "paperwork" and will only be there for 90 days.
The Governor said he had "deployed up to 10,000 Texas National Guard to the border to fill the gaps created by Biden's reckless open border policies."
In addition, Governor Abbott told Fox News that the lifting of Title 42 restrictions is the equivalent of a "welcome matt" to anyone in the world to come to the U.S. He said the President is not realistically protecting the border.
