The state gemstone of South Dakota is the Fairburn Agate.
Fairburn Agates are known for their distinct banding of different colors of chalcedony.
Fairburns can be found in agate beds along the South Dakota and Nebraska borders.
Lapidary artists love to make cabochons and jewelry pieces out of these amazing stones.
The State Mineral of South Dakota is Rose Quartz.
Rose Quartz was found in the late 1800's in the Black Hills area and has been mined for it's beautiful pink color.
Rose quartz can be found on every continent and is very plentiful.
Lapidary Artists and Jewelers like that it is plentiful and that it cuts and polishes nicely.
Collectors love it because it's affordable and a desirable crystal.
