HOUSTON, TX - Spring Independent School District recently named Chase Giddings as high school director of bands after Trent Cooper's retirement from the position at the end of 2020-2021.

Giddings is the first African American High School band director for Spring ISD. According to Dr. Joe Clark, Spring ISD Director of Performing and Visual Arts, this promotion reflects how the district promotes diversity as they are not only promoting a dedicated and commendable member of their performing arts faculty but also celebrating the diversity of talents and backgrounds.

During his graduate school years at Sam Houston State University, Giddings had two teaching experiences at Dekaney and at Bammel Middle School, and Clark was the campus band director at that time. In 2016 Giddings joined Dekaney High School as assistant director and later as associate director of bands.

Last year, Giddings completed his master's degree in conducting at Sam Houston State University. He already knew that he wanted to be a band director since he was in middle school. After Giddings met Cooper and saw the high standards of ensemble and musicality level at Spring ISD, he decided to teach there.

For him, this new promotion is a milestone in his career. Clark mentioned that Giddings was his student teacher at Bammel Middle School, and later became his first hire as Spring ISD director of performing and visual arts. He also said that in Giddings's first year, the district named him as a head director at Claughton Middle School, and even though it was unusual, he knew Giddings would thrive and he did.

As an educator, Giddings's goal is to enable young people to strive for excellence, have fun, create, and grow as human beings. He also noted how children want to be in a place where they can feel safe, supported, and be themselves.
