New high-comfort bike lanes along Polk Street

Marisol Gallagher

HOUSTON, TX — Replacing the existing low-comfort bike lanes, a new bike lane is ready to facilitate bikers of Polk Street. The also improvement included repairs to sidewalks and curb ramps from Emancipation Ave. to Cullen Blvd.

The old bike lanes have a white stripe as a separator from vehicles and were often narrow. The high-comfort bike lanes are wider and feature a barrier to protect and prevent cars from driving in them.

The lanes also feature floating bus stops — platforms to facilitate passengers entering and exiting buses. The bike lanes are placed behind the bus stops. The improvement hopes to solve safety issues for both buses and bikes alike.

This high-comfort bike lane is part of the Third Ward Bikeway Network funded by Harris County Precinct One. The Third Ward community has set infrastructure and mobility goals through several studies and plans. These include the Third Ward Mobility Assessment report and the most recent Third Ward Action Plan under Mayor Turner’s Complete Communities initiative. They aim to expand bike lanes and facilities, addressed directly through the proposed rapid implementation bikeway network.

Partners of this project are Harris County Precinct One, City of Houston Planning and Development Department and Houston Public Works. Jones | Carter, Toole Design Group, and Traffic Engineers, Inc (TEI) are the managers and the design consultant of the project.

The City of Houston-Harris County partnership continues to strive to meet the goal of improving neighborhood mobility and increasing safety and comfort for the community. The City of Houston Planning and Development Department continues to engage with members of the community through regular meetings to achieve this goal.
