HOUSTON — The Houston Dash enter the international break with their victory of 1-0 on the road against Kansas City NWSL in the afternoon of June 6. Kristie Mewis, the Dash midfielder, found defender Katie Naughton off a corner kick 79 minutes into the game, scoring the game’s only goal.
Naughton’s header beat Kansas City goalkeeper Abby Smith and tallied her first goal with Dash. The last time Naughton scored a goal was during her time as a member of the Chicago Red Stars in 2018.
In the first half of the game, Houston’s best opportunity came in the 23rd minute off a cross from their defender, Ally Prisock. The defender’s cross was recycled inside the box before the first-touch pass from Mewis, initially intended for Shea Groom. Smith collected the ball outside the six-yard box right before Groom could get a final touch on it.
Kansas City was denied a goal two minutes later, after the team’s forward Mariana Larroquette was deemed offside. However, the team was awarded a free-kick near midfield, and unmarked Larroquette had an open header outside the six-yard box that ultimately found the back of the net.
Goalkeeper Jane Campbell presented a key save in the 88th minute, preserving her first-ever clean sheet of the season. Darian Jenkins got behind the backline and found room to shoot from inside the box, but Campbell was ready and well-positioned to make the save, catching the ball at the top corner of the near post. She finished with three saves for the game.
Upon returning to Houston for a pair of friendlies at BBVA Stadium as part of the USWNT Summer Series, Campbell and Mewis will join the U.S. Women’s National Team. The two four-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champions will face Portugal on June 10 and Jamaica on June 13.
