Sunday, August 15th, 911 callers reported shots being heard in the 400 block of N. Elk Street and that two people had been shot. Officers arrived on-scene to find two (2) victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were adult females and the shooter(s) had fled the scene. One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was transported in critical condition by ambulance to local hospital.
At about 4:40pm Monday, investigators arrested a 38 year old Hemet man for the shootings of two women on Elk Street in Hemet Sunday night. Brian Kevin Kumpe was arrested in San Jacinto after detectives worked throughout the night developing leads and clues that led them to identify Kumpe as being the shooter in the senseless act. Kumpe is believed to be the driver of the dark colored Chevrolet Tahoe SUV that was described by witnesses. Kumpe shot the two women, who were still in their car, and then fled the scene. The SUV was located and is being processed by crime scene techs for evidence.
There are no additional suspects being sought in regard to this shooting.
The identity of the deceased victim has not been released pending family notification. Second victim suffered serious injuries and investigators will be speaking with her at a later time.
Brian Kevin Kumpe, 38 years from Hemet, was processed at Hemet Police Department and was transported to Riverside County Jail. Kumpe was booked for Murder with a Firearm, Attempted Murder with a Firearm, and various other charges.
