Even after the Christmas Holidays, the COVID testing site in Winthrop has a line stretching a quarter-mile down the street.

The site, located in the center behind the old E.B. Newton School, is opened daily, except Sundays, from 9:00–1:00, alternating between drive-thru and walk-up testing.

As of January 4th, the town reported:

  • 1,383 cases
  • 32 deaths
  • 147 in isolation
  • 1,204 recovered

An additional 51 positive cases were reported on January 1st. Town Manager Austin Faison says this puts the infection rate at about “25% above the state average.”

The Town of Winthrop website encourages residents to avoid social contact, especially indoor gatherings. A cluster of cases was reported in October and linked to the Winthrop Lodge of Elks and Pleasant Park Yacht Club.

Outdoor testing will continue for another two weeks. Testing will then be moved indoors.
