When BurgerFi announced a location at Ellisburg Circle Shopping Center in Cherry Hill more than a year ago, people wondered if another burger restaurant was necessary for South Jersey. While other burger chains such as Shake Shack, Habit Burger, and Fatburger have opened in recent years, this is the first BurgerFi for the region. There are also Five Guys, Smashburger, and Wayback Burgers fast-casual franchises in the area.
After more than a year of construction due to the pandemic and labor shortage delays, BurgerFi opened its doors at 1584 Kings Highway in early October 2022.
According to its website, BurgerFi was established in 2011 and founded by gourmet chefs committed to serving the highest quality fresh food in an eco-friendly environment. The burgers are from natural Angus beef sourced from the leading ranches in the country, and they make fresh-cut, made-to-order fries and also offer frozen custard desserts.
They also offer vegan/veggie-friendly options, chicken sandwiches, and hot dogs. The chain is known for its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness, using recycled materials in its restaurants and offering biodegradable packaging and utensils.
Cherry Hill location owner Matthew Daniel, a serial entrepreneur who owned a Frutta Bowl franchise before opening BurgerFi, noted some initial bumps when it first opened.
"The labor shortage has been my number one challenge," Daniel, 30, said. "I've had to hire a whole new staff since I opened. I am committed to delivering a great product and excellent customer service."
One of those hires was General Manager Nicole Jackson of Deptford, who oversees daily operations for Daniel. After working together, the business has been running more efficiently over the past couple of months.
Like many restaurants, the impact of post-pandemic challenges and inflationary issues linger. Still, Daniel is optimistic that the franchise will succeed because of its prime position on Kings Highway and its high-quality food.
"Business is good and picking up," he said. "People are pleased with the food and seeing returning customers."
The Blackwood resident is so sure that the concept would succeed in South Jersey that he has already started looking at sites for a few additional franchises he plans to launch in the upcoming years.
