Parousia Coffee is a two-year-old Richmond-based mobile coffee seller. It is expanding its business with a new cafe in Scott’s Addition neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia to operate alongside the company’s mobile coffee trailer. The name Parousia is the translation of the Greek word for “presence” or “arrival.”

Parousia Coffee signed a lease last month to open a shop at 2900 W. Clay Street. It will move into an 850-square-foot storefront on the ground floor of the VIV at Scott’s Collection Apartment Building on the east side of the neighborhood.

Co-owners Jimmy Garcia, Michael Hartke, and Christian Diaz plan to invest up to $150,000 for buildout, furniture, and other expenses to open the upcoming cafe. It will be a place for people to enjoy high-end coffee.

Jimmy Garcia said:

“Specialty coffee sometimes comes with the air of a snooty vibe. I remember going to a third-wave cafe in college and being kind of intimidated. There’s a gap for people who want to experience good coffee but are scared by it.”

When the coffee shop opens, it will be able to seat 18 people at a time and also offer house-made pastries.

Michael Hartke said:

“It’s been so awesome for us exposure-wise and community-wise, so we’d like to continue that.”

The three friends were inspired by their shared love of coffee to launch their business in January 2021. They began to sell coffee beans in June 2021. They have sold coffee from their trailer since early 2022.

Hartke added:

“All three of us love coffee and we love going to coffee shops. This (upcoming cafe) for us is a labor of love and a way to channel everything we love about coffee, but also all the tiny things that make the experience of a coffee shop,”

When Parousia opens, it will be the third coffee shop to open in Scott’s Addition in under two years.

  1. Charlottesville-based Grit Coffee opened last month at 1601 Roseneath Road.
  2. Afterglow Coffee Collective opened its cafe about a year ago at 1719 Summit Avenue.
  3. Parousia Coffee will open in the fall of 2023 at 2900 W. Clay Street.
