People lose small items or leave them behind all the time. That's why most stores, restaurants, hotels, airports, and other places have a lost and found department. Therefore, owners can claim their lost items. If they can't retrieve their small lost items, they can easily replace them by purchasing new ones. Most of the time, it doesn't cost much to replace an umbrella, scarf, or a cheap bracelet.
However, there is a recent story about an Uber passenger in Norfolk, Virginia who left a much larger item behind. So, what was it?
Package left in Uber car
On May 3, 2023, Gabriel Zapata booked a trip from Norfolk to Chesapeake and back to Norfolk. On his return trip to Norfolk, he left behind a brown paper bag.
When the Uber driver spotted the bag, he realized it contained an illegal substance. He was quick to get it out of his possession. Therefore, he immediately called the Norfolk Police Department. It was later determined that the bag contained methamphetamine.
The passenger searched for the package
According to court documents, Zapata contacted the Uber driver through Facebook and offered him $1,000 for the return of the bag. The Uber driver had already turned it in to the police. When the officer tested and weighed the contents, he discovered that the bag contained 4.59 pounds of methamphetamine which was estimated to have a street value of about $200,000.
Zapata arrested
Zapata was found and arrested at a hotel in Hampton, Virginia. In his room, police found more meth, marijuana, and a gun. He has been charged with possession with intent to distribute meth. He was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
Zapata was charged with a felony that occurred in March when he failed to stop at the scene of an accident.
