According to data from the Chamber of Commerce, a list has been provided showing the loneliest cities in the United States. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau revealed that more than 36 million Americans are living in one-person households.

More than 170 cities were evaluated. The Chamber of Commerce used the following data to specify the loneliest cities.

  • Populations of 150,000 and more
  • Number of people living alone
  • Increase in data since 2016

In the top four cities, the number of people who live alone has increased. The number is expected to go even higher. In nearly all of the loneliest cities, more women than men live alone.

Number 1: Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. is at the top of the list for being the loneliest city in the United States. Of the 319,565 households in Washington, D.C., about 154,140 residents live alone in the nation’s capital. There is only one person in 48.2% of the households. About 21.5% of males live alone, and 26.7% of females do the same.

Number 2: St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis, Missouri with 143,566 has ranked second on the list. The number of solo dwellers has increased by 1.9%. Even so, it is at a slower pace than the other lonely cities on the list. An average of 47.5% of homes are occupied by only one person. In St. Louis, 21.8% of men live alone, and 25.7% of women live alone.

Number 3: Alexandria, Virginia

Alexandria, Virginia is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area where people living alone seems to be a trend. While Washington, D.C. came in first, nearby Alexandria came in third. According to the Census Bureau, there are 71,289 and 33,508 of them are one-person households within the city. That's 46.5% being single-person households. In Alexandria, 20.3% of men live alone, and 26.2% of women live alone.

Number 4: Richmond, Virginia

Richmond, Virginia, where this writer lives, has been ranked the fourth loneliest city in America. There are 91,005 households in Richmond, Virginia with 46,196 of them being one-person households. That's 46.2%. Compared to other cities, the number of people living alone in Richmond increased by more than 3% in recent years.

It is interesting that Richmond's neighboring cities also made the list: Washington, D.C. and Alexandria, Virginia. Richmond also ranked the number 1 loneliest city for the 28% of women living alone while it is not for the 18.2% of men who live alone.
