Hunter Biden requests judge to stop his daughter from taking his surname

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has been in the news for a while now over emails on his laptop even though no criminal charges have ever been brought against him. Since 2018, the 52-year-old attorney's tax affairs have been under federal criminal investigation. Now Hunter Biden is in the news concerning a family matter.

Biden's daughter with Lunden Alexis Roberts

Hunter Biden has a 4-year-old daughter with Lunden Alexis Roberts. At first, he denied the child was his because he says he doesn't remember having an encounter with her because he was in a relationship at the time with Hallie Olivere Biden, his brother's widow.

Roberts filed for paternity and child support. DNA results confirmed Hunter Biden is the father. Biden settled that lawsuit in March 2020 for an undisclosed amount. However, he reportedly has no contact with his daughter by Roberts.

Roberts' request

Roberts filed a petition on December 27, 2022 for Circuit Court Judge Holly Meyer to allow her daughter Navy Joan Roberts to take Biden's last name. She argued that her daughter would benefit from associations with the name because it is "now synonymous with being well educated, successful, financially acute and politically powerful."

Biden's requests

According to court records, Biden now accepts the child as his, but he is hoping a judge will honor his request. On January 6, 2023, he requested a judge to stop his daughter from taking his surname, according to the New York Post.

Biden's reason is different from the child's mother's reason. He said the name would rob the child of a "peaceful existence."

In September 2022, Biden also requested to have child support payments reduced for the girl because his financial circumstances had undergone a "substantial, material change."

Hunter Biden's marriages and children

Biden married Kathleen Buhle in 1993. They have three daughters together: Naomi, Finnegan, and Maisy. The couple divorced in 2017. Biden began a relationship with his brother's widow from 2016 to 2019. The daughter of Lunden Alexis Roberts was born during that time in August 2018.

Within a week after meeting South African filmmaker Melissa Cohen, Hunter married her in May 2019. Their son was born in March 2020. They named him Beau after Hunter's deceased brother.
