The NBA G-League is continuing to expand by adding the first franchise from outside of the United States, The Mexico City Capitanes. The Capitanes will also be the first Latin American team in the 2021-2022 season.
Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus the Capitanes will not play in Mexico city and will play all of their games in the United States due to international travel restrictions. In the official press release the Capitanes stated, "The situation for this season doesn't change our long-term promise to our fans: we want to represent both Mexican and Latin American sport and its fans and make them proud. We want to write the first chapter in our NBA G League story close to our Capitán family despite the physical distance".
According to NBA Insider Marc Stein earlier this afternoon, The Mexico City Capitanes will be based in Fort Worth, Texas for practice and housing purposes for the season and will play all games in their inaugural season in existing league markets.
They will be right up the street from the Dallas Mavericks Affiliate the Texas Legends in Frisco, Texas.
The Capitanes hired Nick Lagios as their first General Manager. Lagios comes from the Los Angeles Lakers Affiliate the South Bay Lakers where he was the Director of Basketball Operations and Player Development. Nick Lagios told Eurohoops "When I first heard there would be a Mexican team I knew I wanted the job. My passion is basketball but I also love learning about new cultures and civilizations." Lagios also stated "I never thought I would get the job because there were so many people looking after it and I didn't speak spanish. When I booked the interview I knew I had a chance because of my experience in the G League."
The Mexico City Capitanes will be the league's 30th team. If you are interested in following the G League teams this season all schedules will be released on September 14th.
