When Steven and Ann Lafferty showed up at my house to clear out some old desks and bookcases, I assumed we would be waiting for the rest of their crew to arrive. Nope. It would only be the two of them. They got right to work, Steven breaking down the furniture, and Ann carrying most of the pieces to the truck.
In about three hours they had broken down two huge desks - one a huge U-shaped, heavy desk (3 pieces), another an L-shaped desk with credenza and 2 mammoth bookcases and had packed everything in the truck to haul away. In the past, I’ve had movers scrape walls before, being careless or having inexperienced workers. Not at all the case with Rakers - they were super careful with moving out furniture.
Steven, with a background in refuse removal, started Rakers in 2016 after growing tired of the corporate world. “Sure, you get a steady paycheck, but you are also expected to work 50 or 60 hours a week.” Wanting a more stable life for himself where he could devote more time to his family, he decided to go into business for himself, opening Rakers. Now, he says, if they want to take a couple days off, they can just easily schedule it around the appointments. It seems to be stress free for them and their customers.
We also found some other items, a recliner, dining room buffet and a huge leather chair that we asked them to take too. “Sure, no problem,” Steven said, “people often find other items they want to get rid of while we are on site.” I was glad that even though I was not able to drop off those items at a used furniture store myself, Raker’s could do it for me and that someone else would get to make use of them. I love their motto - "Landfills are the last resort!"
I’d contacted Rakers to clean out these rooms from my late father’s home in order to get it ready to sell. I truly appreciated that with all the stress surrounding the selling of a home after the death of a parent, junk removal was stress free. Arranging the pickup was super easy since I was dealing directly with the business owner. After contacting Rakers via email, I just sent Steven a couple pictures of what needed to be removed so he could determine the price and estimate the time needed.
Where did the name Rakers come from? The first ever garbage collectors were called “Rakers” because they “raked” up trash. Rakers embodies dependability, quality, and ingenuity, according to Steven. I couldn't agree more!
