Looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of Atlanta? I don't blame you. I had a great getaway with my family in Hiawassee and know the perfect place for you to stay! Hiwassee is about 2 hours from the north end of Atlanta. So, if you are in Cobb, Cherokee, Gwinnett or North Fulton, it will take approximately 2 hours to get there.

Here are 5 reasons The Retreat at Hiwassee River is a fabulous place for families to stay in North Georgia.

1. Hiawasse Retreat is designed for family reunions and small weddings

With 11 cabins all within walking distance of each other, they can hold anywhere from four to eight guests. That's quite a few people. Though there were seven of us in our cabin for the weekend, we never felt crowded or in each other's way. Plus there was so much recreational space outdoors, we spent the bulk of our time exploring the area or taking advantage of the swing, fire pit and club house.

There was a wedding happening the weekend of our stay. Even in mid-march, the weather was quite perfect for being outdoors and while we weren't wedding guests, I'm so glad that couple had nice weather to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor area along the river, setup specifically for weddings.

2. You can truly disconnect and have family time at these Hiawassee cabins

Besides fully equipped kitchens to prepare meals (yes, we used the over, stove top and even brought a slow cooker for some juicy pot roast during our stay), there is plenty to keep a family busy on a weekend. Check out the game room below. We enjoyed a couple rounds of pool before heading back to our cabin. But how great would it be to enjoy some hot chocoate by the fireplace? And this room comes wtih a large kitchen if you have a big family to feed.

3. Enjoy the peaceful sounds of the Hiawassee River from each cabin.

Yes, that's right. Each cabin at the Hiwassee Retreat provides close proximatey to the Hiawassee River. Plus, during the low season, you will probably find one of the several couch swings (see above) vacant to snuggle up. Or just relax by yourself and catch up on some reading.

4. Take advantage of the nearby waterfall hikes and Bell Mountain

When you've driven a couple hours, you don't really want to spend an inordinate amount of time in your car until it's time to go home. At least that's how I feel. Luckily, The Retreat at Hiwassee River is only a short ten minute drive to High Shoals Falls.

Plan your visit during non-peak times as parking is limited. However, it is totally worth the effort to visit. We came across several brave souls plunging into the water, but be advised the water stays rather cool year round. Working up an appetite we headed back to our cabin for sandwiches.

On another day we took the very steep drive up to Bell Mountain. If you have never heard of it, Bell Mountain is a graffiti covered rock that draws big crowds. If you can climb up to the top the views will certainly pay off. Again, this was quite a short drive from our cabin. Protip: Bell Mountain is a little over a mile from the Hiwassee Town Square. You’ll turn onto Shake Rag Road and follow it about 1.5 miles to Bell Mountain. GPS may not be able to find it.

5. Firepits, corn hole and volleyball are just some of the things to enjoy on site

There are plenty of outdoor activities right on site at the Retreat at Hiawassee River. So even with little ones, they can run around and play on the swings or corn hole. Meanwhile the adults can relax after dinner by the fire pit.

We cherished our family time together over the weekend. And we loved the seclusion and how connected we were as a family while remaining disconnected from much of the outside world. You can book Hiawassee Cabins here - hiawasseeretreat.com/.
