On July 31, Community Pharmacy will move to a new location at 130 S. Fair Oaks Avenue on Madison’s near east side. The move will cost the shop $150,000.

Support is growing for police abolition in Madison, particularly among the staff and student body at the University of Wisconsin. According to a survey conducted by UW’s United Faculty and Academic Staff labor union (UFAS), 57.1% of respondents indicated that police abolition is needed. The pool of respondents was 70% UFAS members and 30% graduate students at UW. UFAS represents all faculty and academic staff at the university.

Undocumented communities in Madison called for citizenship for all and the restoration of driver's licenses ahead of the Wisconsin Presidential visit. On Monday June 28, a crowd of activists and supporters for the campaign for driver's licenses and citizenship for all gathered on the steps of the Capitol. The group began their march at 10 a.m. and walked from Olbrich Park to the Capitol, where leaders of the Voces de la Frontera campaign spoke. The activists are demanding action ahead of the President’s visit to Wisconsin on agriculture and rural economies.

2021 Juneteenth Celebration in Penn ParkMaggie Degnan. Every June for the past 32 years, the city of Madison hosts the Madison Jazz Festival (formerly the Isthmus Jazz Festival). Jazz lovers from around the state converge for over a week to witness electrifying performances and talented musicians. On June 19, Milwaukee singer, bandleader and songwriter Donna Woodall performed at Penn Park at the Juneteenth Celebration. Juneteenth is the anniversary of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Texas, which at the time had been controlled by the Confederates, to announce that the enslaved Black Americans were free by executive decree. The formerly enslaved people in Texas coined the term ‘Juneteenth’ to commemorate the historic day. On the eve of her performance, Woodall spoke with NewsBreak for an interview.

The report, released in April this year, analyzes the level of disparity in local jail incarceration rates in Dane County. The statistics come from six cities of Dane County: Fitchburg, Madison, Middleton, Monona, Sun Prairie and Verona.
