Baton Rouge has a lot of good restaurants, and many are convenient to the interstate. When driving through town, however, it can be difficult to know exactly where to get a satisfying meal without losing a lot of time in traffic.

For fresh, delicious Chinese food at a reasonable price, Cheng's Restaurant and Bar just off Essen Lane at I-10 is a winner.

The extensive menu includes appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, fried rice, lo mein, noodles, and desserts. Guests will find traditional menu items such as Kung Pao, General Tso's, Sweet & Sour, Triple Delights, and Shrimp with Lobster Sauce as well as a few other items they may be less familiar with. Unique favorites include Ants Climbing Trees, stir-fried potato noodles with minced pork and onions; Fish or Beef with Pickled Mustard Greens, sliced white fish filet or sliced beef boiled with pickled mustard greens in spicy oil soup; and Bok Choy with Shitake Mushrooms in Oyster Sauce.

Lunch specials, served 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM Tuesday through Friday, come with sides of egg fried rice or plain lo mein, an egg roll or 2 spring rolls, and a crunchy cucumber salad. Combo plates are served with steamed rice, brown rice, or fried rice (+$1); a choice of eggroll, spring roll, or crab rangoon; and a choice of egg drop, hot & sour, or miso soup.

Closed on Mondays, Cheng's is open Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday from 11:00 AM to 9:30 PM and 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Friday and Saturday.
