His name is James Harris Simons, and he is one of the highest-earning hedge fund managers in the world. This incredible success made him one of the wealthiest people in the world. His net worth exceeds $24.4 billion, making him the richest person in East Setauket, New York.

Who is James Harris Simons?

James Harris Simons is a renowned mathematician and billionaire hedge fund manager.

Jim Simons was born on April 25, 1938, in Brookline, Massachusetts. His father owned a shoe factory and was able to send his only son to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1958.

After earning his bachelor's degree, he traveled west and settled in California, where he attended the University of Berkeley, where he received his doctorate in mathematics in 1962 at the age of 23.

Then, armed with a doctorate, he returned to MIT, where he taught for one year before becoming an assistant math professor at Harvard University. In 1964, the National Security Agency recruited him to be a code breaker, but he was fired in 1967 for his opposition to the Vietnam War.

Soon after getting fired from the National Security Agency, he worked at Stony Brook University in East Setauket, New York, as head of the math division. Under his leadership, the math division became one of the best math departments in the country.

The mathematician who cracked Wall Street

James Harris Simons left Stony Brook in 1977 to start Monemetrics, later named Renaissance Technologies, a quantitative investment management company that focused on commodities.

Simons used his mathematical knowledge to produce exceptional returns for the firm's investors. He also recruited physicists, programmers, and cryptographers to help increase his investors' returns. As a result, his quantitative investment strategies have delivered annual returns of about 40% since 1988.

He told California magazine, "We hired people who were very good scientists but who wanted to try something different. And make more money if it worked out."

Today, Renaissance Technologies manages about $50 billion of assets.
