He was born in Michigan, and his parents emigrated from Germany six months before his birth.
He moved to Germany to work at Richard's Medical.
Schmieding earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology from Michigan State University in 1977. After graduating, Schmieding worked for Richard's Medical, a U.S. firm specializing in orthopedic surgical implants and instruments. The company sent Schmieding to Germany.
In 1981, while working in Germany, Schmieding used $60,000 from his own money to start a medical device company called Arthrex Inc. The company focuses on minimally invasive orthopedic surgeries.
He moved the company to the United States three years later and established his first office in Burlington, VT. However, in 1991, Arthrex moved its headquarters to Naples, FL.
Today, Arthrex employs more than 4,000 corporate and manufacturing staff in the United States. It also has more than 3,000 US sales professionals and 1,800 employees worldwide, and it sells its products in more than 100 countries around the world.
