About Los Angeles California

Local Business CA

Celebrities, movie cameras, and persistent paparazzi – these may be the hallmarks of present-day Los Angeles. Still, the second-largest city in the United States has a rich and varied history that extends far beyond the glitter of the silver screen. The city's abundant sunshine and temperate climate, which attract so many folks to the area today, were first enjoyed by the native Tonga peoples. However, the University of Southern California – the Trojans – that's LA's largest private-sector employer. Cuisine and fine dining are two more of the city's strengths. The plethora of restaurants, providing everything from a quick bite to elaborate tasting menus, reflects the international make-up of the city's population.

The original name given by the original residents was believed to be because of the large river in the vicinity. A village called existed where the Los Angeles Civic Center now lies. The name comes from the name given to the Los Angeles River by the Gaspar de Portola expedition that camped on its banks in 1769. Twelve years later, Spanish California's military governor, Felipe de Neve, founded a new settlement on that campsite near the river and named it (The Town of the Queen of the Angels). The name was eventually shortened to Los Angeles.

It is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City. It is and the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. In large basins, the Pacific Ocean bounds the town on one side and by mountains as high as 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) on the others.

Hollywood Sign

By the 1930s, the Holly woodland development had petered out, but the sign's myth grew as it became an unwitting symbol for the film industry. The "land" was torn down in the late '40s, and by the '50s, the shortened Hollywood Sign was a mascot for the dreams of stardom. The sign we have now was erected in 1978, with money donated from Andy Williams, Alice Cooper, and Hugh Hefner.

Film Studios & Parks and Walking Trails

Los Angeles is one of the oldest and most famous Hollywood film studios. It is also one of the oldest theme parks globally and has evolved considerably since it first opened its doors to the public. In the eastern part of the Santa Monica Mountains, covering 1,700 hectares 4,210 acres, it is the largest state park in California.

Walking trails and scenic drives through the mountains offer views over the city and beyond. It is a destination in itself, with its unique history and iconic sites. The attractions in Hollywood are closely associated with the film industry and the glamour of the silver screen. The hillside Hollywood sign, Hollywood Boulevard, the Walk of Fame, and the Chinese Theatre can quickly fill a day or two of sightseeing.
