On thursday, September 16, 2021, two people had been murdered in Columbus, Ohio in two separate shootings within the span of 2.5 hours. The two murders had taken place in completely different locations, with one on the west side of the city and the other in a near-campus neighborhood. These homicides mark the 150th and 151st of the homicides that have occurred in the United States in 2021.

The victim of the first shooting within an alley between 19th and 20th Avenues had been found alive and carried to a hospital, but died a half-hour after arriving at Grand Medical Center. The victim had not been an OSU student or staff despite the shooting happening in an area with a lot of student rentals.

Only hours after the attack on the first victim, authorities had been sent to investigate another scene of another shooting within an apartment complex on the west side of Floral Circle South. The victim had died less than an hour after being shot.

After the two shootings and the passing of the victims, a third fatal shooting had occurred just before 11 p.m. This shooting had occurred near the east side by the Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The victim had been pronounced dead at the scene shortly after officers arrived. The motivations and causes behind the shootings are still under investigation.

Shootings and gun violence have always been a topic for discussion in America, as well in countries outside of America who observe the rate of killings we have within our country. Events like the daylight shootings that occurred in Ohio and school shootings seem to just be the average within the United States. Each time a murder of this calibur occurs, the topic of how we can stop gun violence comes up once again.

The United States, despite making up less than 5% of the world’s population, has 31% of the world’s mass shooters. These statistics alone show how much of an issue that shootings are in America, and that we should do what we can to lower this number. While it is true that mass shootings are a small amount of the United State’s overall gun violence, they are the main topic to bring awareness to the gun violence that is rampant within our country.

One of the ways that has been proposed to stop this gun violence is to ban assault weapons. While the ban of assault weapons will not make a major change, it is a good first step to ending the violence that plagues the country.

"Bans on assault weapons can both reduce the mayhem from and perhaps even reduce the frequency of these lethal crimes. We see from diaries of the mass shooters that they see the AR-15 or some such as the vindication of their manhood and power and a vehicle for addressing their perceived grievances." -Professor John J. Donohue III

While it will take many steps for us to truly be able to reduce the amount that these shootings occur, it’s important for us to look towards what we can do to help lessen the amount of lives lost within our country. Shootings occurring at the speed they are is a terrifying thing to witness, and many Americans are at risk of being put into the position of being in a shooting just by walking down the street.

Until we are able to make the changes needed, all we can do is remember the victims like those in the 3 Ohio shootings, and remember history so that we may be able to prevent occurrences that have happened in the past from ever happening again.
