BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA - 20-year-old Abdishakur Samatar was arrested and charged in connection with the theft of a Glock handgun from The Modern Sportsman gun store in Burnsville, Minnesota on May 30, 2023.

From the Probable Cause Statement that was filed by the District Court for the State of Minnesota, officers from the Burnsville Police Department were called out to The Modern Sportsman gun store for a reported theft around 12:33 PM on May 30, 2023. En route to the scene, Burnsville Police Officers were informed employees had chased Samatar following the theft and were able to detain him before their arrival.

According to the Probable Cause Statement and following an investigation into the incident by the Burnsville Police Department, Samatar entered the store and asked employees of the business to see some ammunition. Employees handed Samatar the ammunition, at which point they noticed he started acting weird as if he might want to steal the ammunition. Samatar then asked to see a firearm, a tan Glock 19, which employees stated they gave to him after he returned the ammunition to the employees. It is reported that once Samatar had the Glock, he ran from the store with the gun with several employees of the business following him. Samatar ran across County 42 toward Sunset Pond where he was detained by the employees of the business and brought back for police to put into custody when they arrived on the scene. When police took him into custody, police did not find a weapon on Samatar.

According to the Probable Cause Statement, Samatar waived his Miranda rights and admitted to police that after taking the weapon from the storm and running, he had dropped the gun after employees of the business threatened to shoot him. With this information, and from reports from witnesses of the incident, police went back to search the path Samatar had run, later finding the weapon in the grass outside the Data Center. The Burnsville Police report that the weapon was unloaded with the slide still locked back. According to the Probable Cause Statement, when going into custody, Samatar made claims that he had stolen the weapon because people were trying to kill him and he didn't have money to pay for the gun. Samatar did not steal any ammunition.

Samatar was charged with one felony count of theft of a firearm with a maximum sentence of 0-20 years and/or a fine of $30,000-$100,000.
