NASHVILLE, TN - Nashville SC defender Alistair Johnston has been selected to the Canadian National Team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches. Johnston will represent the Canadian National Team in three qualifier games, two in Toronto, and the other one in Nashville.
The Nashville SC defender will play on Thursday, Sept. 2 against Honduras at BMO Field in Toronto, then he will go back to Nashville in Nissan Stadium to play against fellow Nashville SC's player Walker Zimmerman and team USA on Sunday, Sept. 5, and then he will close out his national team duty in Toronto against El Salvador on Wednesday, Sept. 8.
Johnston has been a Canadian national team starter ever since his brilliant MLS rookie season in 2020. He got his first international call-up in January 2021, and since then he has played in 10 games, helped the team to win eight out of 10, and recorded five clean sheets. The young defender got a taste of his first big international tournament when he played in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, where the 22-year old played in all games and helped the Canadian side to reach the semi-final.
Johnston currently plays in his second season in Major League Soccer. He started in 14 games and became one of the key players in Nashville's defense. Johnston's hustle on the field is shown with a 60.6% duel win rate, 50% successful tackle rate, and he wins 57.1% aerial duel.
