In a move that will surely make McDonald’s executives nervous, Wendy’s is bringing back an item that McDonald’s can’t deliver as well.
McDonald’s is notorious for its ice cream machines not working. So getting a fan favorite ice cream dessert is something McDonald’s can’t consistently deliver.
McDonald’s has been trying to fix this problem for years, but it hasn’t quite figured out how to make everything run smoothly.
Wendy's brings backs the classic Vanilla Frosty for 2023
Wendy’s is known for its “fresh, never frozen” burgers, and the Frosty is one of the original menu items.
The Vanilla Frosty made its debut in August 2006. Wendy’s brought vanilla Frostys in June 2022 after they had been gone for several years. And now they’re bringing them back again this winter.
The simple addition to Wendy's menu was a simple subtraction of the chocolate in making the chocolate frosty, according to Reader’s Digest.
If you've ever tried to eat a Frosty through a straw, you know that it's basically impossible. The Frosty is meant to be eaten with a spoon, not sipped through a straw.
Vanilla Frosty came off Wendy’s menu to make way for seasonal Frosty flavors like the Strawberry Frosty last summer.
How the Wendy’s Frosty machines work
The Wendy’s Frosty machines only have room for two flavors simultaneously.
So it has been necessary to drop one taste just so they can bring in temporary, seasonal ones like Strawberry or Peppermint.
Wendy's CEO Todd Penegor said in the 2022 second-quarter earnings call that the strawberry Frosty’s success led Wendy’s to add new flavors.
And finally, expand beyond its two-flavor system.
Wendy’s has the perfect response to McDonald’s ice cream machine issues.
According to Chew Boom, Wendy's is selling Vanilla Frosty again from through winter 2023.
As of January 16, 2023, there were 5,896 Wendys restaurants in the US. Florida has the most number of locations, with 524. Followed by Texas, and Ohio. In California, there are 289 stores, which is about 5% of the total, and one store for every 136,720 people.
Final thoughts
The fast food chain is number two to McDonald's and nipping at its heels. So it has a plan to get back a critical item that McDonald’s doesn’t have an answer for: the ability to deliver a frosty treat.
Now Wendy’s will take advantage of this weakness and bring back something customers want.
