April is National Autism Awareness Month. With a focus on autism for the entire month, the goal is to help educate and make people more aware of autism and the variety of ways that it can affect people.

What Is Autism

Autism spectrum disorder or Autism is a broad range of conditions including struggles with social skills, nonverbal and speech communication issues, repetitive behaviors, and other issues that may vary widely from one patient to another.

Per the Centers for Disease Control, autism may affect as many as 1 out of every 44 children. As many as 200,000 children and adults are diagnosed with autism annually. There are also many subtypes of autism. As a spectrum disorder, it can vary greatly from one patient to another with patients displaying a variety of strengths, weaknesses, and challenges.

Symptoms Of Autism

People who are diagnosed with autism may display challenges with everyday activities. They may excel in one subject and have a passion for the particular subject matter while showing no interest at all in other subjects. According to research early interventions can have a positive outcome for those who are struggling with autism.

They may display repetitive actions and such other medical issues as gastrointestinal issues, seizures, sleep issues, depression, anxiety, and attention disorders. Autism is typically diagnosed in childhood although there are many adults on the autism spectrum that haven’t ever been diagnosed. Signs of autism typically appear by age 2 to 3 with some presenting as early as 18 months of age. Many people with autism can live independently and lead very successful lives.
