Community Meetings for Discussion on Proposed Electric Rate Increase

Leah O'Daniel

By request of the City Council of El Paso, El Paso Electric (EPE) will host several upcoming community meetings to discuss their proposed rate increase.

According to the state statute, EPE must file a base rate case every four years. The last base rate case was filed in 2017. This year, it must be filed no later than mid-December 2021. In June, EPE filed an application with the Public Utility Commission (PUC) of Texas to increase rates by 13.36%. According to EPE, this increase would work out to $11.76 for the average customer utilizing 686 kilowatt-hours per month.

In the application, EPE asks the PUC to consider its investments of nearly $1 billion. EPE also included a new plan to support electric vehicle charging stations. For more information, please check El Paso Electric’s website here.

Shortly after EPE filed the application, the city voted to suspend the proposed increase until early October. Now EPE will host one meeting in each district to discuss the proposal.

The first meeting was held by District 4 on 27 August. The next meeting will be hosted by District 8 on Wednesday, 1 September at 5:30 PM.
