The first time I moved to South Carolina in 2014, I fell in love with the whole state. The culture, the people, the food, the beer. If you live near Columbia or are passing through, you can't miss these 5 breweries.
1. Steel Hands
Located in Cayce, South Carolina right outside of downtown. Steel Hands offers live music from local artists on Thursday-Sunday. Bring a blanket to take advantage of the open grass when outdoor tables are full. Not your speed? They offer indoor seating and food as well. Interested in how they craft their beer? Schedule a tour on Friday or Saturday. With 16 beers on tap from IPA to Pilsner, this one is sure to have something for everyone.
2. Columbia Craft Brewing Company
Open Monday-Saturday, this brewery is packed with year-round options. With a rotating lineup of local food trucks, this one won't disappoint. Brewery tours are currently closed for COVID-19 concerns. Arguably one of the most notable features of this microbrewery is that they are committed to sustainable brewing practices. Find out how on their website.
3. Seminar Brewing
For a short drive from COLA, hit up I-95 to Florence for Seminar Brewing. From cider to a one of kind vanilla porter, this brewery has it all. With an extensive outdoor beer garden and pool tables, you don't want to miss it. They boast a full menu from upgraded salads to bar food classics. As a bonus, you'll find Blade and Bull ax-throwing located inside, too. Head on over for blades and brews.
4. Hunter-Gatherer Taproom
Located in the historic Curtiss-Wright Hangar near downtown, this one is a favorite. Grab one of 14 brews, a speciality cocktail, or a glass of wine and head up to the rooftop for views you can't miss. With plenty of outdoor space and seating, it's fun for the whole family. Check out their menu of appetizers, handcrafted pizzas, and bar snacks here.
5. Craft and Draft
Can't make up your mind? No problem. Different from the other breweries on this list, Craft and Draft is the premier marketplace for beer. With two locations in Columbia and Irmo, this taproom offers selections from all over South Carolina. Be sure to visit for weekend brunch too!
